Laser & You – Frequently Asked Questions

We all know how frustrating and confidenceimpacting unwanted body hair can be. It can limit what you wear and how you feel, whether that’s avoiding a sleeveless top or feeling uncomfortable in a skirt. Many people turn to shaving or waxing, only to find these methods are shortterm, inconvenient, and often irritating to the skin.

At Laser & You, we offer a longlasting, effective solution with advanced laser hair removal. Our treatments are comfortable, efficient, and clinically proven to significantly reduce unwanted hair on almost any area of the body. Our team of experienced professionals is dedicated to delivering exceptional care, personalised treatment plans, and real results. You are always welcome to book a free consultation to discuss your goals and ask any questions before starting treatment.

1. How effective is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal can achieve up to 80–90% permanent hair reduction, regardless of gender and suitable for a wide range of skin tones. In the past, laser treatments were limited for darker skin tones or seasonal use, but advances in technology have eliminated many of these restrictions.

The number of sessions required varies from person to person and depends on factors such as genetics, age, hair colour, hair density, and hormonal balance. However, most clients notice a visible reduction in hair thickness and regrowth after their very first session. Over the following weeks, hair grows back finer and slower, significantly reducing the need for frequent grooming.

2. What is the difference between laser hair removal and IPL?

Laser hair removal and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) are often confused, but they are very different technologies. While both use energy to affect hair growth, laser systems deliver a focused, precise beam that targets the hair follicle directly. IPL, on the other hand, disperses energy broadly, which can reduce effectiveness and increase the risk of skin irritation or burns.

Medicalgrade laser systems penetrate deeper and more accurately, allowing for greater customisation based on your hair type and skin tone. While IPL treatments may appear cheaper initially, they often require many more sessions to achieve modest results. Investing in laser hair removal offers superior outcomes, safety, and longterm value.

3. How does our laser hair removal system work?

At Laser & You, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro, a goldstandard, medicalgrade laser system, combined with the latest Zimmer cooling technology to deliver safe, effective, and comfortable laser hair removal.

Following your initial consultation and detailed skin assessment, our clinicians precisely customise the treatment settings based on your skin tone, hair type, and treatment area. The GentleMax Pro targets melanin (the pigment within the hair follicle), allowing controlled laser energy to be absorbed and converted into heat. This heat safely disables the hair follicle while preserving the surrounding skin.

The system features dual wavelengths — 755nm Alexandrite and 1064nm Nd:YAG — enabling safe and effective treatment across a wide range of skin tones. Treatments focus on hair in the Anagen (active growth) phase, maximising longterm reduction.

For enhanced comfort, the Zimmer cooling system delivers a continuous stream of cold air before, during, and after each laser pulse, significantly reducing heat sensation and protecting the skin without the need for cryogen sprays. Sessions are quick, convenient, and require no downtime. A soothing aloe vera gel is applied posttreatment, and clients can return to normal activities immediately.

4. Are there any risks?

Laser hair removal is a noninvasive procedure and is very safe when carried out by trained professionals, such as the team at Laser & You. Every treatment is personalised — we do not believe in a onesizefitsall approach.

Unlike waxing or tweezing, the hair is not pulled from the root, and unlike shaving, there are no cuts or abrasions. Depilatory creams can cause irritation or allergic reactions, which laser treatments avoid. Temporary redness or warmth may occur after treatment, but this typically settles quickly.

5. Are there benefits beyond smooth skin?

Yes. One of the biggest additional benefits is a reduction in ingrown hairs and folliculitis. As hair growth is disrupted, trapped hairs become far less common. Over time, the skin appears smoother, clearer, and more eventoned. Pigmentation and irritation caused by repeated shaving or ingrown hairs often improve significantly once hair reduction is achieved.

6. How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required varies depending on hair thickness, colour, treatment area, genetics, and hormonal factors. Most clients require around six sessions, although some areas respond more quickly. For example, many clients see up to a 50% reduction in leg hair after three sessions.

Laser technology cannot effectively target grey or white hair, and hormonal conditions such as PCOS may influence the number of treatments needed. That said, we have successfully treated clients with PCOS and clients across all gender identities. Our approach is inclusive, experienced, and tailored to each individual.

7. How long should I wait between sessions?

Laser hair removal targets hair in the active growth phase, which varies across different areas of the body. On average, treatments are spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Facial areas usually require shorter intervals, while body treatments may need slightly longer gaps.

8. What should I do before and after treatment?

Before starting your course, we carry out a patch test to assess your skin’s response and ensure optimal safety. Prior to each session, you’ll be asked to shave the treatment area so the laser energy can effectively reach the hair follicle.

After treatment, we recommend avoiding very hot showers, exfoliation, and excessive sweating for 24 hours. Beyond this, you can return to your normal routine. While treatments are safe yearround, we advise avoiding direct sun exposure and using SPF as a precaution.

Treated hairs will shed naturally over the following one to two weeks, and finer regrowth may appear before your next session. With each visit, hair becomes progressively weaker and less noticeable, helping you stay smooth and confident throughout your treatment journey.
